Geneva,
New
York is a thriving city on the northern shore
of the lovely Seneca Lake. Located in
eastern Ontario
County, the City
of Geneva is actually within the borders
of the Town of Geneva.Geneva was
named after the canton and city of Geneva
in Switzerland. As of the 2000 census, the city
had a total population of 13,617 and the town reported
3,289.Seneca
Lake, named for the Seneca
Indians who once inhabited this beautiful
region of New York, is the deepest and widest of
all of the eleven Finger
Lakes. It is a renowned haven for fisherman,
especially those in search of freshwater trout. Scuba
divers are privy to a unique diving
experience due to all of the sunken barges at
the bottom of the lake. On the shores of Seneca Lake
is
Belhurst
Castle, voted "One of the Most Romantic
Places in New York State." This historic castle
affords some of the most stunning views of the lake. A
drive through the city reveals such charming historic
sites as the row houses or the Smith
Opera House. Residents and visitors to
the area also enjoy golfing, sailing, skiing,
swimming, shopping and wine tasting.
The
Seneca
Lake wine trail, established in 1986, rapidly
became the winery and grape growing destination
of choice in the entire Finger
Lakes region. It is currently the largest and
most dynamic wine trail in New York State
and is home to special events throughout the
year. With nearly forty wineries
located along Seneca Lake's shores, it holds it own
with the most popular wine regions of California, Washington
and
Europe. The region's unique geology and
topography make the Finger Lakes area prime
for growing their luscious grapes.
The
City government offers a wide range of services meant
to enhance business growth and development. Among
these are a loan fund and an industrial development
agency for new and expanding businesses. Geneva is
home to a division of Guardian
Industries, a world-renowned glass
manufacturer, CCN,
an international company that makes luxurious office
furniture, and Zotos,
the number three hair care products manufacturer in
the world. A park to research agriculture
and food technology is currently in the works. This
project will offer land, space, and association with
Cornell University's Agricultural Experiment Station.
Because Geneva is located within equal distance of Rochester,
Syracuse
and Ithaca,
its businesses are in a position to utilize
opportunities not usually found in a city this size.
Geneva
College made national history in 1849 when Elizabeth
Blackwell graduated top of her class, becoming the
first woman in the United States to earn a
medical degree. Shortly thereafter, Elizabeth
and her sisters established the New York
Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children in New York
City, staffed entirely by women. In
1868, a medical school for women was established
at the hospital site. Thirty years later,
the hospital became affiliated with Cornell University
Medical College. Cornell
University is still operating in Ithaca
today; however, Geneva College is not. Its successor
is Hobart
and William Smith College. In addition to The New
York State Agricultural
Experiment Station of Cornell University's College
of Agriculture and Life Sciences, there are nearly
forty other fine colleges and universities all within
an hour's drive of Geneva.
Geneva,
NY is a spirited community in the heart of Finger
Lake's wine country that offers an abundance
of opportunities for business and recreation.
