Lyons,
New
York, a
historical community located between Syracuse
and Rochester
on the Erie Canal, lies at the foot of the splendid Finger
Lakes Region. The Town
of Lyons, named after Lyon,
France, also contains a village of the same name.
As of Census 2000, the town has a population of about 5,831,
over 3,695
of which live in the Village
of Lyons.
Throughout
this Erie
Canal community are wine trails, farmers
markets and miles of hills that gently rise and
fall along the countryside. In the heart of Lyons
village lies an old-fashioned business district,
various shops owned by local families, and other historic
landmarks. This lively community celebrates
together year round. With summer comes the annual Peppermint
Days Festival and in winter, the festivities
begin with a Christmas
light competition.
As
the Wayne
County seat, Lyons is home to the majority of government
offices in the county, including the historic Wayne
County Courthouse. The courthouse has been in
continuous use since 1854, even since the recent
building of the Hall of Justice. The second
floor courtroom still possesses the original ambiance
of the building and is the setting of the courtroom
portion of the 1988 movie, Lady
in White. Many of Lyon’s other charming
attractions were used in the movie, including the downtown
business district, Village Square, and the clock tower
of the Methodist Church.
Business
opportunities abound in this prosperous community.
The convenience of the Greater
Rochester International Airport in Monroe
County or the Syracuse
Hancock International Airport in Onondaga
County provide Lyons' companies access to all
national and international business markets.
A
comprehensive public
education system accredited by the New
York State Education Department is in place here.
Multiple venues for higher education are within a
thirty-minute drive of Lyons. Some of the choices are Hobart
and William Smith Colleges in Geneva,
SUNY
Oswego in Oswego,
Wells
College in Aurora,
Nazareth
College and Saint
John Fisher College both in Rochester.
Lyons
offers the serenity of rural life along with easy
access to all that Upstate
New York has to offer.
