Monroe
County, New York lies on the southern shores
of lovely Lake
Ontario. Part of the renowned Finger
Lakes Region of Upstate
New York, Monroe County is home to the state's
third largest metropolis, Rochester,
which also acts as the county seat. Found in the
northwest portion of New
York, this prosperous county is between the
thriving cities of Buffalo
and Syracuse.
Monroe
County's early history centered around Rochester,
which used its location on the Genesee
River to power mills, grinding the grain grown in
the largely agricultural region. With the
construction of the
Erie Canal, Rochester became a major shipping
town, and the area began to flourish. Industry
discovered this lovely rural County, and the region
grew. Census 2000 reported Monroe's County's
population at over 735,000, with close to half of that
being centered in Rochester.
Today,
Monroe County's nineteen towns and ten villages retain
a mixture of both agriculture and industry, while
Rochester is the central hub for commerce and banking.
Modern high-technological industries have also
discovered the fine quality of life that Monroe County
offers, diversifying the solid economy even further.
Both the giant Eastman
Kodak and Bausch
and Lomb Corporations make their world
headquarters here. From large companies such as Xerox,
to smaller, growing firms like PaeTec
Communications and Harris
Interactive, businesses are finding the fantastic Economic
Development Plan in place here. Monroe
County industries export more on a per capita basis
than any other region in the country.
Monroe
County offers eight institutions of higher learning to
its residents, along with claiming five of the top one
hundred school districts in the nation. Brighton
is home to Monroe
Community College. Brighton is one of the
County's oldest towns, and takes pride in being known
as 'one of America's most attractive residential
towns.' The State
University of New York resides in Brockport,
known as the 'Victorian Village on the Erie Canal.'
The
city of Rochester holds six higher institutions.
The University
of Rochester, St.
John Fisher College and the Rochester
Institute of Technology offer the finest in modern
education. Special colleges are found here also,
such as the National
Institute for the Deaf. The
Nazareth College teaches music, and students are
privileged to study with professional musicians,
including members of the Rochester
Philharmonic Orchestra. The Roberts
Wesleyan College is famed for being a dynamic
leader in liberal arts for Christians. Monroe
County provides a highly skilled and educated
workforce for incoming firms.The
Greater Rochester
Metropolitan Area and Monroe County, New York
offer an excellent quality of life to businesses and
residents alike. Outstanding natural beauty is found
throughout the County, from the beaches and shorelines
of Lake Ontario, to wonderful woodlands scattered through
the many acres of Monroe County parks.
A low cost of living, low crime rate and low
unemployment blend well with the increasing growth and
prosperity of the area. Monroe County is
positioned for a future of opportunity.
