Pittsford, New York
Pittsford,
New York
located in Monroe County,
is an affluent suburb of Rochester,
NY. The District of Northfield, formed in 1796, was subdivided in the following
years, with a final split forming the towns of Pittsford and Henrietta in 1814.
The Pittsford name was chosen by Col. Caleb Hopkins, a leading citizen who had
been supervisor and a hero of the War of 1812. Hopkins named this town for his
hometown of Pittsford, Vermont. Pittsford was given a great economic boost when
the Erie Canal opened in 1825. That growth, along with the railroad's arrival in
1842, turned Pittsford into a major shipping and transportation crossroads.
Pittsford, population 27,219 (U.S.
Census), is an area of beautiful homes and
gardens, trees and historical buildings and just enough retail to satisfy the
daily needs of residents. The Pittsford
Plaza on the west side of the town, is home
to one of the largest Wegmans
stores in the state, and is the flagship store and a major test center for the company.
Golfing is of major concern in Pittsford, NY and Wegmans sponsors the
Wegmans International every June.
Held at the Locust Hill Country Club,
it is an annual stop for the LPGA
tour. Also in Pittsford is the Oak Hill
Country Club, which has hosted a number of United
States Opens and, as recently as 2003, the PGA
Championships.
Pittsford is proud of its many community programs, such as the
Keeping
it Green Initiative. What began as a
standard recycling program has grown to include special household hazards
disposal days, commitment to measurable reductions in Pittsford’s greenhouse gas
emissions, energy reduction plans for all town facilities, and a Green Advisory
Board.
The Town of Pittsford maintains its own Pittsford
Town Court at 3750 Monroe Avenue. The Town
Court handles misdemeanors, traffic matters, town and village ordinances, and
provides jurisdiction over any felonies that occur within the town borders.
Civil proceedings, where claims amount to $15,000 or less are handled in the
Town Court, and small claims matters under $3,000 are litigated in Small Claims
Court. Pittsford also has an alternative approach to juvenile justice in their
Youth Court. An appointed Court Administrator manages and administers the court
system.
The Monroe
County Court system handles many of the
family law matters in Pittsford. Wills, estates, adoption, and guardianships are
handled at the county level by the Monroe
County Surrogate's Court in Rochester.
Monroe County Court handles criminal prosecutions of felonies and misdemeanors
committed within the county, although in practice most misdemeanor offenses are
handled by lower town and village courts. County courts also have limited
jurisdiction over personal injury and other civil lawsuits, generally involving
claims of up to $25,000.
The statewide Supreme Court
generally hears cases outside the authority of the lower courts such as civil
matters and personal injury cases beyond the monetary limits of the lower courts’
jurisdiction. The Supreme Court is also the primary court for divorce, separation
and annulment proceedings, and criminal prosecution of felonies. The Monroe County
Court and the statewide Supreme Court come under the administration of
The NY State 7th Judicial District
Court. The court is located at the Monroe County Hall of Justice, 99 Exchange
Blvd. in Rochester, New York.
Pittsford is served by two Rochester Hospitals, both of which are approximately
six miles from the town border. Highland
Hospital is the 911 Emergency response intake, and
Monroe Community Hospital, a county
owned health care facility, are both excellent medical destinations for Pittsford
residents with sudden illness and personal injury or those seeking traditional
hospital care.
The Pittsford Central School
District is one of the top school districts in the county, in the state and
in the nation. The 30 square mile school district includes portions of the towns
of Brighton,
Mendon,
Penfield,
Perinton,
Pittsford, and Victor
The district's programs, staff and curriculum are considered among the best
available in schools anywhere. The system consists of five elementary schools,
two middle and two high schools.
