Sodus,
New
York is nestled midway
between Syracuse
and Rochester on
the south shore of stunning Lake
Ontario. Known as the 'Crown Jewel
of Lake Ontario', Sodus is one of two towns in
Wayne County. Sodus includes two villages,
the Village of
Sodus Point and
the Village of Sodus. The 2000 U.S. Census reported
the town's population at 8,949. Nearly 1,800
of those people live in the Village of Sodus and 1,160
in Sodus Point. Also in Sodus are several hamlets,
including Sodus Center, Wallington and Alton.
The
Sodus area, settled in 1794, is still steeped
in history. Sodus
is one of two areas in Wayne
County that experienced a military
battle during the War of 1812. During the Battle
of Sodus Point, the British burned all but one
building in the village. Sodus is the birthplace
of Arbor
Day and the Shaker
religion. The first Shaker communities were
established in the area in 1826. Historical sites
from the War of 1812, and former Shaker communities,
such as
Alasa
Farms in Alton, are scattered
throughout the area.
A
drive through the countryside reveals the Lighthouse
Museum, Chimney
Bluffs State Park, historic cobblestone
structures, roadside
farmer's markets,
wineries and
numerous other attractions. Once known as Silvery
Waters, derived from the Native American word
'assorodus,' this beautiful harbor was a major
shipping port on the Great Lakes. Today, Great Sodus
Bay is home to some of the most well equipped
marinas in all of the Great
Lakes area. Celebrations, such as the Salmon
Derbies, Firemen's Days, the Bog & Grog, Shaker
Days and the Fourth of July Gala bring this close-knit community
together year round. Sodus is also home to the
beautiful beaches of Lake Ontario and Brantling
Hill, the only ski resort in Wayne
County.
Public
schools in Sodus offer children personalized
attention with teacher to student ratios no
higher than
1:11. Many
of the area's schools have renovated to accommodate
the ever-expanding technology of the twenty-first
century. With thirty colleges and universities within
an hour's drive of Sodus, the area is brimming with
