Wayne
County, New York, named for General
Anthony Wayne, is located on the southern banks of
Lake
Ontario in the western part of the state of
NY. Found within the Finger
Lakes Region, Wayne County is northwest of Syracuse and
east of Rochester.
The Finger Lakes were believed by early Native
Americans to have been formed when the Great Spirit
blessed the region, leaving behind his handprint. The
lakes were formed by glaciers during the Ice Age and
are unique geographical features found nowhere else in
the world.
Wayne
County is home to twenty-four quaint towns and
villages, of which Lyons is
the county seat. The county population, as of 2000,
was 93,765 people.
With 56% of the county's area made up of water, it is
a haven for fishing enthusiasts. Fishing is a year
round attraction; ice fishing is popular in the
winter. Wayne County is also known for its skiing
(downhill and cross-country), canoeing, golf, hunting,
boating, historic
museums and it's unique

picturesque scenery. In the northern part of the

Greater Rochester International Airport and
the Hancock
International Airport in Syracuse are major
airports within a 30-minute drive.
