Webster, New York
Webster,New York
is located in Monroe County, bordered on the north by
Lake Ontario and the west by
Irondequoit Bay. It is the fastest growing suburb of
Rochester, NY. The Town of Webster
contains the Village of Webster, an autonomous incorporation. The town is named after Daniel
Webster, (1782–1852) a leading American statesman during the nation's westward expansion. In
1837, farmers from North Penfield petitioned the state legislature for separate town status.
By 1840 the petition was granted and the northern part of Penfield was officially established
as the town of Webster, with an initial population of 2,235. The 2000 U.S. Census reported the
population of Webster as 37,926.
Webster was named "Number 1 Sports Town in New York" by
Sports Illustrated Magazine in
2005. "Webster's commitment to finding creative and resourceful ways to enhance
sports for the well-being of its community fits perfectly with the principles of our
sports town program” said SI’s Publisher David Morris.
The
Webster Thomas High School hockey team and soccer teams are both state award recipients in
past years. The Town of Webster sports facilities include
stadiums,
a hockey / soccer complex, an indoor track, and an
Olympic-size indoor pool.
Webster's business-friendly infrastructure for industrial and commercial development
is already in place. Zoning separates areas reserved for industrial, commercial, and
residential development. Business development amenities such as easy
Interstate 90 access and the availability
of Rochester International
Airport bring Webster closer to our nation’s marketplaces. International trade is
easily accommodated with the St.
Lawrence Seaway system, via Lake Ontario and Irondequoit Bay, connecting U.S. ports
and Canada.
The Town of Webster provides the town and the Village of Webster with a
Justice
Court located in the Van Ingen Court Building at 1002 Ridge Road.
The Justice Court handles misdemeanors, traffic matters, town and village
ordinances and provides jurisdiction over any felonies that occur within the
town borders. Civil proceedings where claims amount to $15,000 or less are
handled in the Justice Court and small claims matters under $3,000 are litigated
in Small Claims Court. Webster also has an alternative approach to juvenile
justice in its Youth Court. An appointed Court Administrator manages and
administers the court system.
Wills, estates, adoption, and guardianships are handled at the county level by
the Monroe
County Surrogate's Court in Rochester. Monroe County Court handles criminal
prosecutions of felonies and misdemeanors committed within the county, although
in practice most misdemeanor offenses are handled by Webster town and village
Justice Courts. County courts also have limited jurisdiction over personal injury
and other civil lawsuits, generally involving claims of up to $25,000.
The statewide Supreme Court generally
hears cases outside the authority of the lower courts such as civil matters and personal
injury cases beyond the monetary limits of the lower courts’ jurisdiction. The Supreme
Court is also the primary court for divorce, separation and annulment proceedings, and
criminal prosecution of felonies. The Monroe County Court and the statewide Supreme
Court come under the administration of The
NY State 7th Judicial District Court. The court is located at the Monroe County Hall of
Justice, 99 Exchange Blvd. in Rochester, New York.
The Webster School District is
part of the Monroe
County School Boards Association. Ranking among the best in New York State, the
Webster School District serves over 8,000 students from Webster and adjacent towns
with seven elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools.
As with most of the towns, villages, and suburban areas around Rochester, Webster
has the renowned Rochester
General Hospital at its doorstep for medical care.
